Acerca de Santiago
My name is Santiago and I am a Spanish pianist, teacher and musicologist. I trained in Classical Piano Performance at the Conservatori del Liceu in Barcelona and later completed a Research Master’s in Musicology at Utrecht University.
I’ve taught piano-related subjects in public conservatories in Spain, and I’ve worked with students with very different backgrounds and goals. Classical piano is my main field, but I’m also very interested in jazz, popular music, harmony and music theory, so I’m happy to move between styles depending on what the student wants to learn.
Alongside teaching, I work in musicological research, especially on twentieth-century music and Cold War musical diplomacy. I think my musicological background has made me quite curious about repertoire in general: I like looking not only at technique and sound, but also at harmony, style, structure and the historical world behind a piece.
I take teaching seriously, but I don’t think lessons should feel stiff or intimidating. I prefer a relaxed atmosphere where we can focus on specific problems, try different solutions and talk openly about what is or isn’t working.
I teach comfortably in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Russian, and I’m happy to work with beginners, conservatory students, advanced amateurs and adults coming back to the piano after a long break.

I usually build lessons around actual repertoire rather than following a fixed method book from beginning to end. If you are working on a piece, we might look at fingering, balance between voices, pedalling, articulation, phrasing, sound production or how to practise a difficult passage efficiently. With pop and basic jazz, I can also work on chord symbols, accompaniment patterns, voicings, lead sheets and simple improvisation.
A typical lesson starts with you playing what you have prepared. I prefer to listen first and then focus on a few specific things rather than interrupt every few bars. I will often demonstrate different possibilities at the piano and explain why one fingering, articulation or harmonic choice may work better than another.
My background is in both piano performance and musicology, so I tend to connect technique with style and structure. For example, we may look at how a phrase is built, where the harmony is moving, or why a certain texture needs a particular kind of sound. I find that students usually play more convincingly once they understand what the music is doing.
I teach beginners, intermediate and advanced students, including adults returning to the piano, conservatory students and anyone who wants a more serious approach to repertoire without making lessons unnecessarily formal.
