Acerca de Eva
I've been working as a private teacher since 2014 with all sorts of students. When possible, I've been doing teaching as well as other jobs such as bilingual guide and hostess and teaching in a Languages Academy. In the past 4 years I decided to just focus on my career as a Language teacher, and although I also teach English, teaching Spanish has turned out to be one of my true passions. Ever since I worked as a volunteer Spanish teacher at Heriot-Watt University I realized how rewarding it was to teach my native language and help others in this process. Have you ever taught grammar to a baby? And yet, they learn how to speak little by little, right? The natural way we learn our native language is the key to learning any other language to me. Since I found out about this approach, as well as language acquisition, my whole language teaching approach changed. I have learned how to speak English mostly following the traditional approach based on learning grammar rules and lists of vocabulary (and barely speaking it). It did frustrate me, that maybe I could remember the vocabulary for the exam but after it I couldn’t keep it. It also frustrated me that no matter how well I knew the grammar rules I’d still make mistakes when doing exercises. After many years dedicated to learning the language, I could barely speak it when I was abroad. The difference between learning or acquiring a language is simple: when we learn we’re aware of the fact that we are learning something, when we acquire a language, we’re not aware of it happening. There are many different techniques that can be used to help students acquire the language. I don’t follow a linear approach (learning first the present tenses, then the past tenses and eventually the future) we can start learning how to speak in present, past or future since the early stages: just like we do with babies, the only thing I must do is to keep it simple, to make it easy for you to understand and speak Spanish from the beginning. This works particularly well with beginners, low intermediate. When you reach an intermediate fluent level that allows us to follow a different approach, since you already sort of master it. If you are an advanced student and want to improve, keep the language active and use it I am here for you as well. A non-grammar-based approach is not for everyone. Language learning is a complex and wide world. What’s good about having different approaches is that you can always choose what suits you better. Regardless of my preferred way of teaching, I always adapt to my students, to what you want to do or need. We can discuss further details in the trial lesson that I offer.
